Texas Born. Family Operated. Over 40 Years of Flavor.

Welcome to Avery’s Kitchen, New Braunfels, Texas. Avery’s is a family owned and operated restaurant. We take pride in crafting each meal with quality and care. Our recipes stem from scratch with over 45 years of in-the-kitchen experience. We believe that good food brings people together, and that is exactly what our kitchen is built on.

Our Story

Avery’s Kitchen is owned and operated by Avery Hernandez (known to locals as “Big Avery”) his wife Sandra (“Sandy”) and his son, “Little Avery.” For over 40 years, the Hernandez family has built a reputation for cultivating homemade, home-style, comfort food, served alongside genuine Southern Texas hospitality. Today, Avery’s Kitchen is managed by daughters Nina S. Muniz and Lorine Hernandez.

Big Avery began working in a kitchen at the age of twelve in Port Aransas, Texas. Avery learned all aspects of the restaurant business from his friends and mentors; Roy Turnbuex, Pete Arzola Sr. (Big Pete), and Wilson White. From baking to butchering, managing and training, Big Avery worked on the foundation he would later build his family on.

“Big A” and “Big Pete” later opened the Island Café and Smokehouse, one of Port Aransas’ most recognizable landmarks and a local hotspot known for its popular Fish-N-Chips and All You Can Eat Flounder. The Island Café quickly became a Port A “must try restaurant,” serving locals and tourists for over 25 years.

The Dockside Years

When Big Pete died in 1986, Avery continued his passion at Dockside Bar & Grill. There, he created three of his signature dishes: the Western Omelet, Shrimp Omelet, and his famous Chicken Enchiladas. Avery managed and operated the kitchen for Dockside Bar & Grill for more than 15 years, building up a loyal following of customers through his hard work and creativity.

A New Beginning

In 2011, Avery and his family opened the first Avery’s Kitchen in Port Aransas. Locals and travelers came for the “fat fluffy omelets,” homemade shredded hash browns, hand-breaded shrimp, and hearty meatloaf. For seven years, it stood as the go-to place for breakfast, lunch, and family meals.

Sadly, in 2017, Hurricane Harvey destroyed almost all businesses in Port Aransas including Avery’s Kitchen. After the island clean-up, the Hernandez family decided to turn limes into Sandra’s Key Lime Pie and brought Avery’s Kitchen to New Braunfels. Our vision is still the same; we want to continue serving delicious, honest food in a welcoming atmosphere for our new community.
